Areas to visit
The area has many castles and historic house worth visiting: Drumlanrig Castle and Country Park by Thornhill is the home of the Duke of Buccleuch and houses great treasures of art by Leonardo Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Holbein, as well as priceless furniture and porcelain.

The splendid mansion, Maxwellton House, the home of Annie Laurie, is 6 miles away.

Thornhill
The ducal village of Thornhill with its wide streets lined with lime trees and fine monument at the centre is half a mile away. It has an excellent selection of shops and restaurants and parking is plentiful.  The people of Thornhill are all extremely kind and helpful.

Drumlanrig Castle
Caerlaverock Castle
One of Scotland's greatest forts is now a nature and wildfowl centre founded by Sir Peter Scott.

Perhaps one of the most unexpected sights in the Nith Valley are the sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin and Epstein dotted around the Dumfries reservoir at Glenkiln.

The village of Wanlockhead, 10 miles north is the highest in Scotland, and offers, in the mining museum, a wealth of information on the centuries when gold, silver and copper were mined there.
